Sidney Stevens Edwards was born in Thame on 30th September 1892 and baptised at St Mary’s church on 10th October 1893.

He was the son of Frederick Wm Edwards and Harriet Edwards nee Mardlin who had marred at Atherston in Warwickshire in 1880.  Harriet was the landlady of the Bird Cage in Cornmarket, Thame.  By 1901 Frederick had died, Harriet had remarried and the family were at the Black Horse in Reading.

Sidney was educated at Oliver Goldsmiths School in Peckham SE London.  In 1911 Harriet was living in Tottenham and Sidney was boarding in Stoke Newington, London, where he was an assistant pawnbroker.

He joined the 5th Battalion of the London Regiment, which was known as the London Rifle Brigade, in March 1915 and served with them in France and Flanders from 3rd October 1916 until wounded at Beureraines, Arras on 26 March 1917. He returned to his unit but was killed in action at the Menin Road near Ypres on 20th September 1917 and was buried where he fell.

He is now buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium.  His name is recorded on the London War Memorial website but he has no known memorial in London or in Thame.
